George B. Schwartz – CEO/President
Mr. Schwartz has served as CEO of DermTech International since mid-2004 and on the company’s Board of Directors since 2000. He previously served as CEO of NDA Partners, LLC, a drug development consulting firm. Prior to that, Mr. Schwartz was a director at SunPharm Corporation, a biotechnology company focused on the development of cancer therapeutics in partnership with Parke-Davis.  The company was later sold to GelTex Pharmaceuticals, now part of Genzyme Corporation. Mr. Schwartz was also Senior Vice President at Drexel Burnham Lambert and a partner in the Airlie Group, LP, a venture capital and investment firm whose general partner was controlled by Bass Brothers Enterprises. In 1998, Mr. Schwartz co-led the leveraged buyout of Aircraft Service International Group, Inc., and served as its Chairman until its profitable sale in 2001. Mr. Schwartz received an MBA from the Amos Tuck School at Dartmouth College and his Bachelor of Arts degree from Vanderbilt University.

Daniel P. Kolk, PhD - Vice President, Product Development
Dr. Kolk has twelve years of commercial experience in molecular diagnostic assay development and assay integration on instruments. Prior to joining DermTech, Dr. Kolk was at Gen-Probe Inc. where he was instrumental in the creation of multiple high-value molecular diagnostic products. There he co-developed an assay that detects HIV-1 and HCV. That assay received FDA licensure in 2002 for use in blood screening and it is currently used to screen over 85% of all blood in the US for HIV-1 and HCV. He also co-developed the next generation version that included detection of HBV and co-led a team that integrated the triplex assay on Gen-Probe’s fully automated TIGRIS instrument. Additionally he co-led groups in the development of quantitative real-time assays for both HIV-1 and HCV. Dr. Kolk graduated from UCSD in 1983 with a B.A. in Biochemistry and Cell Biology. He received his Ph.D. from Arizona State University in 1992. He did his Post-Doctoral work in the University of California, San Diego Department of Medicine where he studied HTLV gene regulation.

Sherman Chang, PhD - Director, Molecular Biology
Dr. Chang joined DermTech in June 2006. He received his PhD in Molecular Biology from the University of Pittsburgh and his MS in Biochemistry and BS in Pharmacy from National Taiwan University, Taipei. Following completion of his PhD, he received postdoctoral training in cancer biology in the Department of Regulatory Biology at the Salk Institute. His second postdoctoral training was in cancer biology at the University of California, San Diego, where he was the recipient of an NIH-funded research fellowship. Dr. Chang has more than eight years experience in the microarray field as well as extensive experience in assay development and technology improvement. Prior to joining DermTech, Dr. Chang was Staff Scientist II at Diversa in San Diego, where he worked on enzyme-based product development using microarray-based genomic tools. Prior to Diversa, Dr. Chang held a position as Staff Scientist at Torrey Mesa Research Institute, a subsidiary of Syngenta, where he developed a high throughput method for expression profiling, a method for microarray-based SNP detection and managed collaborative microarray projects for Syngenta.

Sylvia A. Norman, PhD – Director, Assay Development
Dr. Norman received her Ph.D. from Arizona State University in 1989, and received her postdoctoral training in neurobiology at the St. Joseph Hospital and Medical Center (SJHMC) in New Jersey. After finishing her postdoctoral training, Dr. Norman was as an intramural research training award fellow at the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases of the National Institute of Health. Upon completing her fellowship, Dr. Norman returned to SJHMC as a postdoctoral fellow and later as a research associate, during which time she used RNA differential display and RT-PCR techniques to investigate the role of certain genes in chemotherapy resistance. Dr. Norman joined the biotechnology industry in 1998, working as a Staff Scientist first at Althea Technologies and later at Stratagene in San Diego, California, where she developed nucleic acid isolation kits. In 1998, Dr. Norman joined Gen-Probe in San Diego, California, where she was the technical team leader for the development of diagnostic assays for several infectious diseases including the Human Papilloma Virus. Most recently, Dr. Norman consulted for Nanogen in San Diego, California, in the area of infectious disease assay research and development.
